Train Your Staff On EMC Fundamentals For Product Design

On-Line Webinars

NEW! “Wireless Self-Interference - Characterization and Mitigation” (2 hours)
Details:
Price $149. Includes seminar notes (PDF). All sessions will be pre-recorded for later viewing by registered participants.

Course Content:
An increasing number of manufacturers are adding or retrofitting wireless technology into new or existing products. These products typically include mobile, household, industrial, scientific, and medical devices. This transition is ongoing exponentially and with it comes problems with EMI. That is, EMI generated on the board itself interfering with sensitive on-board cellular, GPS/GNSS, and Wi-Fi/Bluetooth receivers. This is called “platform" or self-interference and it’s become a big problem for manufacturers. This webinar will discuss methods for characterizing this self-generated EMI and suggest several potential mitigations. Topics will include Basic CTIA requirements for cellular receiver sensitivity, coupling mechanisms, PC board design for low EMI, characterization measurements of EMI, and ten mitigation methods for reducing self-generated EMI.

NEW! “Radiated Emissions Troubleshooting & Pre-Compliance Testing” (2-hour sessions for 2 days)

Price $295. Includes seminar notes (PDF). All sessions will be pre-recorded for later viewing by registered participants.

Course Content: The focus of the course will be troubleshooting and performing simple characterization and pre-compliance testing at the work bench level for the number one EMC issue; radiated emissions. In addition, the most common design issues will be covered that lead to radiated emission compliance failures. Enough basic EMC theory and examples will be covered to aid in understanding these common design issues. There will be plenty of time for questions. Professional engineers will qualify for four professional development hours (PDH).

The standard seminar runs just one day and includes a subset of the 2-day curriculum, but is focussed on information important to mechanical engineers. A 150-page set of seminar notes is provided on PDF (only). Please request the business policies document for more details and information about arranging the seminar.

Why Attend? Because time-to-market and budget factors often drive many of today’s high-tech designs, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) issues often surface at the last moment in the design cycle, potentially delaying product introductions. Very often, simple pre-compliance measurements and techniques can identify issues early when the cost of implementation is substantially lower and design improvements may be made with less impact on schedules. This seminar covers the basics of EMC design, simple bench top measurement methods and includes a number of simple techniques and tools useful in characterizing designs at various stages of development and will better prepare products for EMC qualification.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completing the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Analyze, measure, troubleshoot and solve an EMC problem in more detail
  • Understand theory from a more in-depth view and understand causes of the top EMC issues: radiated emissions radiated immunity and electrostatic discharge
  • Proper PC board design is key to many EMI issues and we’re one of the few instructors that describes proper stack-up and routing from both a circuits and fields viewpoints
  • Make or purchase simple low-cost bench top troubleshooting tools
  • Perform simple evaluation and pre-qualification tests to ensure likeliness of compliance

Target Audience:

Analog, RF, Mechanical and Digital hardware design engineers will benefit from this course. A basic engineering background (BSEE or equivalent) is required.

“EMC Essentials” Outline:

Day 1
: EMC Theory (Part 1) - Attendees will be introduced to basic EMC theory; units of measurement, time and frequency domain, differential and common mode currents, radiated emissions, PC board layout from a circuits and fields viewpoint, shielding/bonding, transmission lines, and how signals propagate in circuit boards. Day 1 is crucial to understanding the Day 2 presentation, as it will also include demonstrations of many of the basic principles.

Day 2: EMC Theory (Part 2), plus Bench Top EMI Measurements, Troubleshooting, and Pre-Compliance Testing - We’ll continue with ESD and system design, followed up with practical low-cost tools and techniques that can be used for pre-compliance measurements as well as troubleshooting typical EMC problems. We’ll demonstrate several probing and analysis techniques that will identify EMC issues quickly. Included in the demonstrations will be the use of real-time spectrum measurements and the use of TEM cells for radiated emissions and immunity troubleshooting. New this year is an expanded section on self-generated EMI for wireless and IoT products. Several real world case studies will also be described.

Day 3 (optional for in-house presentations, extra $2,800/day): Many companies elect to have me stay an extra day to help evaluate current projects. I can also teach more on how to perform pre-compliance testing, including setting up a temporary measurement range and a pre-compliance test lab. This could save countless time and money by lowering the risk when attempting third-party compliance testing. After-seminar time reserved to answer attendee questions related to individual EMC design problems.

“EMC Essentials” for Mechanical Engineers Outline:

Day 1: Introduction to EMC (theory, testing and standards), introduction to ESD (measurement, test, and design for compliance), shielding essentials (theory, cable shielding / termination, and measurement of shielding effectiveness), system design and grounding, bench top troubleshooting and design evaluation testing, design reviews and case studies.
